Ler rápido o texto e ainda ler as questões e ainda achar a resposta no texto, etc e tal’?
Aliás, esta expressão: ACCORDING TO....será encontrada em praticamente todas as provas. Muitas questões começam assim: ACCORDING TO THE TEXT....(de acordo com o texto...)

Brazil: One Growth Obstacle after Another

After just eight months in office, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the left-wing Workers' Party has won congressional approval for economically critical and politically controversial pension and tax reforms.

Now, however, da Silva faces a bigger challenge: reviving Brazil 's economy. In 2003's first half, Brazil 's economy fell into recession. Most economists expect growth for the entire year to be a miserly 1%.

And a governmentlinked research group recently embarrassed ministers by predicting growth of just 0.5% in 2003. Taxes are a serious obstacle to growth. Brazil 's tax burden is among the highest in the world, equal to 41.7% of salaries.

Reforms now proceeding through Congress will simplify the tax system, but won't reduce the total burden. That will be possible only if interest rates fall and the government can keep spending in check, thereby reducing the amount of money needed to pay its own debts. For now, Brazil 's economy is going nowhere.
(By Jonathan Wheatley in São Paulo – adapted. From: Business Week September 10, 2003)
1)The picture of the current Brazilian economy given by this article is
a) highly optimistic.
b) guardedly hopeful.
c) unremittingly positive.
d) faintly negative.
e) distinctly bleak.
Então, qual é a resposta certa? Cenas dos próximos capítulos.....
Será que existem outras técnicas? Quem sabe as descobriremos juntos. Afinal, o conhecimento é infinito!
See you soon

TAG QUESTIONS

He isn't a doctor, is he? (Ele não é um médico, é?)

FUTURO: WILL E GOING TO

–> The train leaves at 10 p.m. (Simple Present: leaves.)
        Eu estou chegando amanhã de manhã. –> I’m arriving tomorrow morning.
Agora, vamos ver o uso de WILL e GOING TO para expressar o Futuro.
Fórmula → (sujeito) + will + verbo principal no infinitivo (sem ‘to’)
Fórmula → (sujeito) + am/is/are + going to + verbo principal no infinitivo

Use WILL:

    * para dizer que algo vai acontecer ou deverá acontecer num futuro não-imediato;
    * quando você não tinha planos de fazer algo, e na hora, durante a conversa, resolve que irá fazer algo;
    * para fazer previsões sobre o futuro, sobre coisas que não podemos ter certeza;
    * quando fizer promessas, se oferecer ou se propor a fazer algo, concordar ou recusar-se a fazer algo;
    * para fazer um pedido polido.
    * em frases condicionais: If (present) + will.
    Algumas palavras ou frases usadas com o futuro com will: I think, I expect; maybe, perhaps; probably, possibly.
    Exemplos:
         1. I think I’ll call him later. No. I’ll call him now.
         2. We’ll probably move to a bigger apartment.
         3. Maybe this help you.
         4. Will you please open the window?
         5. They will never come if you don’t invite them.

Use GOING TO:

    * para falar sobre uma ação, fato ou situação previamente planejada;
    * para expressar uma ação que acontecerá num futuro imediato ou certo;
    * para dar uma aviso a alguém sobre uma situação perigosa.
    Exemplos:
       1. I am feeling horrible. I’m going to get sick.
       2. Now that I have all the money, I’m going to buy a new car.
       3. Where are you going? I’m going to fetch some coffee.

- What time is it? (Que horas são?) – Mais usada
- What’s the time? (Que horas são?)
It’s five o’clock. (São cinco horas).
It’s midday. (É meio dia).
It’s midnight.
Nesta expressão o’clock, este o’ é contração de of the: It’s five o’clock = It’s five of the clock.
Observe:
It’s seven a.m. (São sete da manhã)
It’s five p.m.
Seguem alguns exemplos:

07:05    It's seven five.                It's five past seven.
07:10    It's seven ten.                 It's ten past seven.

Ex.: on 27 December 1970.
- Somente o ano, usa-se a preposição in.
Ex.: on a Sunday.

Bastando apenas a seguir regrinhas elementares.

CIDADE = CITY
VELOCIDADE = VELOCITY
SIMPLICIDADE = SIMPLICITY
NATURALIDADE = NATURALITY
CAPACIDADE = CAPACITY

Regra 2

SIMPLIFICAÇÃO = SIMPLIFICATION
NAÇÃO = NATION
OBSERVAÇÃO = OBSERVATION
NATURALIZAÇÃO = NATURALIZATION
SENSAÇÃO = SENSATION

Regra 3

Veja agora abaixo algumas delas:

NATURALMENTE = NATURALLY
GENETICAMENTE = GENETICALLY
ORALMENTE = ORALLY

Regra 4

Eis algumas delas abaixo:

ESSÊNCIA = ESSENCE
REVERÊNCIA = REVERENCE
FREQÜÊNCIA = FREQUENCE
ELOQÜÊNCIA = ELOQUENCE

Regra 5

Veja alguns exemplos:
NATURAL = NATURAL
TOTAL = TOTAL
GENERAL = GENERAL
FATAL = FATAL
SENSUAL = SENSUAL

1 - GERÚNDIO USADO NO PRESENTE E NO PASSADO CONTÍNUO
ex. I am writing. (Eu estou escrevendo.)
I was reading a book. (Eu estava lendo um livro.)
2 - ADJETIVOS:*
ex.: interesting (interessante), exciting (excitante), amusing (divertido), tiring (cansativo), surprising (surpreendente), annoying (irritante), …
3 - SUBSTANTIVOS:
O sufixo -ing também forma substantivos.
ex.: swimming (natação), surfing (surfe), skiing (esqui), shopping (compras), learning (aprendizado), cleaning (limpeza), testing (teste), feeling (sentimento), speaking (fala) …
ex.: Dreaming is free. (Sonhar é gratuito - não custa nada).
Exploring is learning. (Explorar é aprender.)
Is arguing productive? (Discutir é produtivo?)
Studying English is great!
I am interested in studying English in England.
I’m so sorry for shouting at you yesterday. (Desculpe-me por ter gritado contigo ontem.)
One of the advantages of working alone is that you can make your own schedule.

Cabin Environment
There is an erroneous perception that the cabin environment of a pressurized aircraft is bad. That is not true. Treated by HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filters - similar to those used in organ transplanting and burn hospital units - the air in airplane cabins is climatized and dehydrated, which makes the environment free from fungi and bacteria and - because the air relative humidity becomes very low - even protects the existing airborne electronic equipment (avionics). The air flow is directed downwards, thus reducing the rate of contamination between seats. Additionally, all of the cabin air is replaced every three minutes. This will keep the oxygen rates throughout the aircraft at much higher levels than those required by human consumption, and carbon dioxide and particulate matter at acceptable levels with respect to passenger safety, health and comfort.

Texto I
A text familiar to many, George Orwell's classic satire has cropped up on school reading lists ever since the year of its creation. Few readers can fail to be touched by the tragedy within, by its wonderful synthesis of unthreatening symbolism and incisive criticism. This familiarity is convenient since, as an adaptation, "Animal Farm" spends too little time on the details of time and place. Instead, directors Joy Batchelor and John Halas thrust us directly into the depression that is Manor Farm, briefly explaining the situation with pictures and narration by Gordon Heath. (...)

Sadly, Batchelor and Halas make it vital to have read Orwell's biting satire on Soviet history before viewing "Animal Farm", just to know what's been left out. As it is, the film grasps the superficial aspects of Orwell's allegoric fable without his deeper message. In missing so badly, we're left with an impressive attempt that never matches up to its birthright.
Texto II
Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely - and this is vividly and eloquently proved in Orwell's short novel. "Animal Farm" is a simple fable of great symbolic value, and as Orwell himself explained: "It is the history of a revolution that went wrong". The novel can be seen as the historical analysis of the causes of the failure of communism, or as a mere fairy-tale; in any case it tells a good story that aims to prove that human nature and diversity prevent people from being equal and happy, or at least equally happy. (...)

In "Animal Farm", Orwell describes how power turned the pigs from simple "comrades" to ruthless dictators who managed to walk on two legs, and carry whips.

The story may be seen as an analysis of the Soviet regime, or as a warning against political power games of an absolute nature and totalitarianism in general. For this reason, the story ends with a hairraising warning to all humankind: "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already it was impossible to say which was which".
Texto III
When the farm's prize-winning pig, Old Major, calls a meeting of all the animals of Manor Farm, he tells them that he has had a dream in which mankind is gone, and animals are free to live in peace and harmony. (...) . When Old Major dies, (...) Snowball and Napoleon assume command, and turn his dream into a full fledged philosophy. One night, the starved animals suddenly revolt and drive the farmer Mr. Jones, his wife, and his pet raven off the farm and take control. The farm is renamed "Animal Farm" as the animals work towards a future utopia. The Seven Commandments of the new philosophy of Animalism are written on the wall of a barn for all to read, the seventh and most important of which is that "all animals are equal" (...). Many years pass, and the pigs learn to walk upright, carry whips, and wear clothes. The Seven Commandments are reduced to a single phrase: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Napoleon holds a dinner party for the pigs, and the humans of the area (in the adjacent Foxwood Farm run by Mr. Pilkington), who congratulate Napoleon on having the most hard working animals in the country on the least feed. Napoleon announces his alliance with the humans against the labouring classes of both "worlds". The animals discover this when they overhear Napoleon's conversations and finally realize that a change has come over the ruling pigs. During a poker match, an argument breaks out between Napoleon and Mr. Pilkington when they both play an Ace of Spades, and the animals realize how they cannot tell the difference between the pigs and the humans.

As questões de 12 a 16 referem-se ao texto a seguir:
An ever-improving
electrical system

If you total up all of the wires and cables of all diameters and lenghs found in a large airplane, they could stretch for hundreds of miles. The plane also has hundreds of places using alternating and low tension continuous current (115 volts). It is common practice for these generating and distribution systems to maintain a solid energy reserve for peak usage times and unusual circumstances.

The kilowatts used on new models cannot be compared to what will be required on board the megajets A380 (now going through flight testing) and the future A350, plus the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. All of these plan on offering new dimensions in inflight entertainment and a level of connectivity that is comparable to what we already have on the ground - for laptops and individual cell phones, broadband internet, e-mail, Wi-Fi (longdistance enlacing), and all the rest.

In today's wide-body planes, the biggest energy consumer is the heating for de-icing and defrosting the windscreens. But, even after adding in the 16 ovens and coffee machines in the galley, plus the electronic navigation, communications and avionics systems, we will still be well short of the electrical system on board the advanced jets that will go into service between 2006 and 2010.

Besides the fact that each of those aircraft will have two (not just one) alternators per engine, there will be other brand-new electrical applications. The wiring may come with a variety of tensions and frequencies, which will bring a new level of freedom to designers who are projecting a much larger, more flexible, more efficient, and safer electrical system.

(...)
For about 25 years, I have had the opportunity to observe the efforts of many individuals applying digital image-processing techniques to problems offered by the real world. A few of these individuals have established an enduring track record of solid success on almost every attempt. They have consistently contributed innovative and effective solutions that creatively employ the tools of the discipline.

These highly productive individuals demonstrably hold several characteristics in common. One can venture to assume that these characteristics constitute a formula for success, to whatever extent such a thing can exist in this field.

Uniformly, these successful persons have (1) a genuine interest in - even a fascination with - the technology involved, (2) a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of this highly multidisciplinary technology, (3) a conceptual type of understanding (as opposed to rote memorization of totally abstract theory), and (4) a knack for seeing problems visually, graphically, and from more than one viewpoint. In line with this last point, they often find themselves hard pressed to explain their ideas without the aid of a graph or drawing.

This book is designed to help the reader develop the last three of these traits and perhaps enhance the first as well. The selection of materials for inclusion (and, equally important, for omission), the examples used, the references cited, and the exercises and suggestions for projects are all directed toward this goal.

In the field of digital image processing, mathematical analysis forms the stable basis upon which one can make definite predictions regarding the performance of a digital imaging system. In this treatment, however, mathematics is employed more as a faithful servant than as a ruthless master. The emphasis is on developing a conceptual understanding, and the analysis is used to support this goal.

• ... (três pontos) indicam a continuação de uma idéia que não está ali exposta;
• negrito dá destaque a algum termo ou palavra;
• itálico também destaca um termo, menos importante que o negrito;
• ‘’ ‘’ (aspas) salientam a importância de alguma palavra;
• ( ) (parênteses) introduzem uma idéia complementar ao texto.

General Comprehension

Por exemplo, vamos ler o trecho abaixo e tentar obter a “general comprehension” deste parágrafo: “Distance education takes place when a teacher and students are separated by physical distance, and technology (i.e., voice, video and data), often in concert with face-to-face communication, is used to bridge the instructional gap.” From: Engineering Outreach College of Engineering – University of Idaho A partir das palavras cognatas do texto (em negrito) podemos ter um a idéia geral do que se trata; vamos enumerar as palavras conhecidas (pelo menos as que são semelhantes ao Português):

• distance education = educação a distancia
• students = estudantes, alunos
• separeted = separado
• physical distance = distância física
• technology = tecnologia
• voice, video, data = voz, vídeo e dados (atenção: “data” não é data)
• face-to-face communication = comunicação face-a-face
• used = usado (a)

instructional = instrucional

Observe este trecho: “Using this integrated approach, the educator’s task is to carefully select among the technological options. The goal is to build a mix of instructional media, meeting the needs of the learner in a manner that is instructionally effective and economically prudent.” From: Engineering Outreach College of Engineering – University of Idaho Selecionando algumas expressões teremos:

• integrated approach = abordagem (approach = abordagem, enfoque) integrada
• educator’s task = tarefa (task = tarefa) do educador – ‘s significa posse = do
• tecnological options = opções tecnológicas (tecnological é adjetivo)
• goal = objetivo

Olhe este trecho: “ Teaching and learning at a distance is demanding. However, learning will be more meaningful and “deeper” for distant students, if students and their instructor share responsibility for developing learning goals: actively interacting with class members; promoting reflection on experience; relating new information to examples that make sense to learners. This is the challenge and the opportunity provided by distance education.” Poderíamos perguntar qual o referente do pronome “ their” em negrito no trecho?
